A manhunt for Charlie Kirk’s killer has intensified after the right-wing political activist and ally of Donald Trump was fatally shot at a Utah college campus.
Officials from the FBI and Utah Department of Public Safety provided updates Thursday on their investigation into the shooting, which unfolded in front of a large outdoor crowd at a Utah Valley University event in Orem around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday.
DPS Commissioner Beau Mason revealed that the shooter, who is believed to be around “college age,” arrived on campus around 11:52 a.m., before jumping off a nearby rooftop after the shooting and making his escape into a neighborhood.
Robert Bohls, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake field office, said that authorities found a “high-powered bolt-action rifle” in a wooded area, which they believed was used to kill Kirk. Bohls said investigators also “collected a footwear impression, palm print and forearm imprints for analysis.”
Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social Wednesday afternoon, prompting an outpouring of tributes from global leaders and lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle. The president later called the moment “a dark moment for America.”
The president announced Thursday, during a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the Pentagon, that Kirk would posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The weapon was wrapped in a towel with a spent cartridge still in the chamber, WSJ reported and three unspent rounds were left in the magazine, all with expressions on them.

The president made the remarks at the top of a speech marking the 24th anniversary of 9/11 at the Pentagon, in which he railed against the “heinous assassination” of the MAGA broadcaster.
“I felt Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said.
“Our prayers are with his wonderful wife Erika and his beautiful children, fantastic people they are. We miss him greatly. Yet I have no doubt that Charlie's voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”
He added: “I'm pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk, posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The date of the ceremony will be announced, and I can only guarantee you one thing, that we will have a very big crowd.”
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor that can be awarded by the Commander in Chief.

Explicit video of Kirk shooting went viral – because social media made death unavoidable to watch
13:25
,
James Liddell
Just minutes after Charlie Kirk had been shot in Utah, video of his death was not only easy to find but for many unavoidable to watch.
Video of the shooting was immediately posted to platforms such as X, formerly known as Twitter, and Meta’s Instagram and others. And because of the feed-based nature of those platforms – where users do not pick what they see next – many were forced to watch a disturbing video without either warning or choice.
Traditional news organisations were cautious in their mid-afternoon coverage of Kirk’s assassination Wednesday, where they chose not to depict the moment he was shot, instead showing video of him tossing a hat to his audience moments before, and panicked onlookers scattering wildly in the moments after.
In practical terms, though, it mattered little. Explicit footage of the shooting was available almost instantly online, from several angles, in slow-motion and real-time speed. Millions of people watched.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has taken to X this morning in memory of Kirk, shared her condolences with his family and condemned those who try and “terrorize” U.S. citizens into “silence.”
The person who shot Charlie Kirk sought to silence him, using violence to take away his freedom of speech by ending his life and to terrorize those who think like Charlie into silence,” she said. “This evil act is the very definition of terrorism: an unlawful use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political or ‘religious’ aims.”
Recognizing the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Gabbard compared the terrorist organization al-Qaeda the “fanatics who try to stop Charlie Kirk” from free speech, claiming they both resort to violence when their views are “challenged in free and open debate.”
Gabbard said she was “sickened, but not surprised” by MSNBC analyst Matthew Dowd’s comments which appeared to blame Kirk for his own death. Dowd was sacked from the network.

“Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?” an audience member asked.
“Too many,” Kirk responded to applause from the crowd.
The attendee informed him that the total was five and continued: “Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?”
“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk replied before, seconds later, he was struck by the bullet and fell from his chair, prompting the panicked crowd to disperse in terror.
