A young man, slated to tie the knot, found himself facing charges in the Magistrate’s Court for causing severe harm to a senior citizen on January 30th.
Mohammad Zakaria Mohd Razali, aged 26, entered a plea of not guilty when accused of inflicting grievous injuries upon a 73-year-old individual at Jalan PP 2/5, Taman Putra Prima between 9 am and 9.20 am. The charge under Section 325 of the Penal Code could potentially lead to a seven-year prison sentence and a fine upon conviction.
During the hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Sabrina Zubairi requested bail set at RM10,000. However, Mohammad Zakaria's lawyer, Fazilawati Hussin, highlighted her client's modest monthly income of RM2,000, which is stretched thin due to supporting two younger siblings and covering his mother's medical expenses for liver disease and high blood pressure.
Adding to the urgency, Fazilawati mentioned Mohammad Zakaria's impending wedding scheduled for February 17 in Kelantan, emphasizing the need for his prompt return to his hometown to make necessary preparations. Fortunately, his fiancée was present in court to assist with settling the bail.
In consideration of the circumstances presented, Magistrate Muhammad Bukhori granted bail at RM7,000, with the stipulation that Mohammad Zakaria refrains from harassing the victim and prosecution witnesses. The court scheduled March 18 for the next mention of the case.
The incident reportedly occurred when the victim was allegedly assaulted while traveling from Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur to Putra Perdana, Puchong Prima, to meet a friend. Despite the attack, the elderly gentleman continued his journey, only to be pursued by the assailant. Upon reaching Putra Perdana, the suspect obstructed the victim's vehicle, forcibly removed him from the car, and subjected him to repeated punches and kicks, resulting in significant injuries.
The victim was subsequently abandoned at the scene, necessitating medical attention at Serdang Hospital. His injuries included swelling on the head, bruises to the left eye, a broken left cheekbone, and a fractured eye socket, indicating the severity of the assault.
