Dato' Seri Wee Ka Siong’s recent appointment as an “Investment Adviser” to Chinese nationals and corporations has sparked widespread discontent within the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), as several party leaders and members feel the post diminishes his stature as party president. This decision, announced by Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during MCA’s general assembly, has since become a hot topic of debate, with concerns that it reflects poorly on the party’s direction.

Former MCA Vice-President Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker is among the most vocal critics, expressing that such a position is “beneath” Wee, given his political standing as MCA President and former federal minister. Ti described the appointment as “superficial” and “undignified,” further emphasizing that it sends the wrong message to the public and grassroots members.

“It is not just about the title; it is about what the position represents,” Ti stated. The role of "investment adviser" lacks the level of significance that a party president's position should command. Wee should have been appointed to a more prominent role, such as a special envoy with ministerial ranking. Such a position would befit his experience and stature.”

Ti, who previously served as deputy national unity minister, also argued that the appointment diverts MCA from its true mission ie. political rejuvenation and electoral preparation. He criticized the post as “random” and “not legally provided for,” noting that many party members view it as unconstitutional and politically motivated.

More troubling, according to Ti, is the potential damage this could do to MCA’s ongoing efforts to regain credibility among Chinese voters. The party has faced declining support in recent elections, and this appointment risks further alienating its core base.

Ti stressed that MCA is a political party, not a business entity. "At this crucial time, our focus should be on developing young leaders and gearing up for the next general election, not chasing after ad-hoc appointments." The optics of desperation could tarnish the party’s image even further.”

The backlash from within MCA suggests deeper concerns about the party’s future. Ti’s warnings reflect the sentiment of many who fear that MCA may lose sight of its political purpose while accepting roles that do little to bolster its influence or standing.

The controversy surrounding Wee’s appointment will likely continue to be a point of contention as MCA struggles to redefine itself in Malaysia’s shifting political landscape.
