Weight loss drug linked to lower heart attack risk in diabetes patients, study finds

• A new US study published in The BMJ indicates that Mounjaro significantly reduces the risk of heart attacks in type 2 diabetes patients who also have heart disease.
• The research, involving nearly 53,000 participants, found that those receiving Mounjaro were 33 per cent less likely to experience a heart attack compared to patients on sitagliptin, another common diabetes medication.
• After one year, the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) was 2.9 per cent for Mounjaro users versus 4.4 per cent for the sitagliptin group, preventing one MACE case for every 70 people.
• Mounjaro also lowered hospital admissions due to infections and prevented deaths from any cause, although no meaningful difference was observed in stroke cases.
• Conversely, a separate study last month linked GLP-1 agonist drugs, including Mounjaro, to hair loss, with UK regulators receiving hundreds of reports concerning tirzepatide and semaglutide.
