In a small Indonesian village, an unusual end to a marriage stunned locals when a husband handed over his unfaithful wife to her lover in exchange for a cow. The incident, which took place in Desa Puudombi, North Tongauna, North Sulawesi, was carried out through a traditional Tolaki ritual known as Mowea Sarapu or Mosehe — a customary ceremony symbolising the cleansing and formal transfer of a divorced spouse.
The unnamed husband remained calm and composed during the ritual, which was attended by local villagers, elders, and community leaders. In the video that captured the moment, he placed a gentle hand on his wife’s lover’s shoulder as he declared that he was relinquishing his now-divorced wife to the man she had chosen. He expressed that she had not found happiness during their marriage and urged her new partner to treat her with kindness and respect.
Village head Safrudin later confirmed the authenticity of the event, explaining that it followed customary Tolaki traditions. The ceremony marked not only the end of the marriage but also the restoration of social harmony in the community, ensuring that no grudges or dishonour remained between the families involved.
According to local reports, the couple had been married for five years before the husband uncovered the affair. Once confronted, both the wife and her lover admitted their wrongdoing, prompting the community elders to intervene and initiate the Mosehe ceremony.
Under the tradition, the man who disrupts another person’s marriage must offer compensation as part of the reconciliation process. In this case, the lover was required to provide a cow, replacing the traditional buffalo offering, along with a payment of five million rupiah — roughly RM1,270 — to the husband. This payment served as symbolic restitution and closure for the wronged party.
Despite the emotional weight of the moment, witnesses described the husband’s demeanour as remarkably calm, with his actions reflecting dignity and adherence to cultural principles rather than anger or vengeance.
The Mosehe ritual is deeply rooted in Tolaki customs and is considered a spiritual cleansing process for individuals and communities following moral or social conflicts. By observing the tradition, both parties are believed to restore balance and prevent lingering animosity.
