Welfare Dept: Suspect in Batang Kali mosque sexual assault case holds a learning disability card

THE 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a young girl at a mosque in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor, has a learning disability card, according to the Welfare Department.

Selangor Social Welfare Department (JKM) director Azmir Kassim confirmed the man's disability status on Saturday, February 22.

"Following our inspection and review, we found that the individual involved has had a person with disabilities (OKU) card since childhood," Azmir was quoted as saying to Sinar Harian.

Previously, the police had been waiting for confirmation from the Welfare Department regarding the suspect's OKU status.

Earlier, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the man has been remanded for seven days.

"The Kuala Kubu Baru Magistrate's Court issued the remand order for the suspect starting Saturday, February 22," he said. "The suspect is being remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017."

The police received a report about the incident at 8:19 AM on Friday, February 21, which had gone viral on social media. The suspect was arrested later that day in the Batang Kali area.

CCTV footage from the mosque showed a man suspected of being involved in the sexual assault. The victim was praying in the back row of the women's prayer area when the man allegedly lifted her and moved her to another location where the assault is believed to have occurred. -  February 22, 2025
