In 2016, I had a major heart attack. Just like that, life hit pause. One moment I was going about my day, the next I was lying in a hospital bed thinking, “This is real — this is actually happening to me.” I survived with one stent, and while I was grateful to still be here, I also knew I couldn’t go back to living the way I had before.

Before that, I lived the way many of us do — busy, distracted, and telling ourselves we’ll fix things later. I smoked, drank, ate whatever was easiest, and honestly believed I had time. In Malaysia, it’s normal to say, “Never mind lah, I’ll start next month,” especially when food, work, and social life are always around. I kept pushing my health aside until my body forced me to stop.

Recovery wasn’t dramatic, but it was demanding. I quit smoking and drinking — no excuses. I changed how I ate, paying attention instead of just eating out of habit. Exercise became part of my life, even on days I didn’t feel like it. Some mornings, getting out the door for a run felt harder than the run itself. Regular medical check-ups, something I used to avoid, became non-negotiable. I told myself, “If I don’t look after my health, nobody else will.”

What truly changed everything was consistency. Not big promises or quick fixes, but small habits repeated daily. One workout. One better meal. One decision at a time. Slowly, those choices added up. Today, I’m fitter than I was in my twenties, and more importantly, I feel in control of my body and my life.

Along the way, I also went through a personal spiritual awakening. For me, that journey led to discovering Islam and believing in one true God. It brought me calm and clarity when I needed it most. At the same time, I respect all religions and beliefs. I don’t think there’s one path for everyone — I believe each of us needs to find our own “zen moment”, whatever helps us heal and feel whole.

Looking back now, I don’t see my heart attack as the end of my story. I see it as the wake-up call I needed. Wellness, to me, is about balance — body, mind, and soul. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: it’s never too late to start, and small, consistent choices really can change everything.
