  • Wes Streeting, the health secretary, has expressed his view that the next Labour Party deputy leader should "ideally" be a woman.
  • Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday 9 September, he noted that "brilliant women" are putting themselves forward to succeed Angela Rayner.
  • Mr Streeting said that women currently hold all major government offices, apart from the prime minister, having been appointed based on merit.
