AS Buddhists across Malaysia celebrate Wesak Day today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of the festival’s enduring values, urging Malaysians to draw inspiration from principles of wisdom, moderation, compassion and kindness in strengthening social harmony and mutual respect.

In a Wesak Day message, Anwar said the occasion offers an opportunity for reflection on noble values that transcend religious traditions and remain highly relevant in nurturing a cohesive and compassionate society.

According to the Prime Minister, the teachings associated with Wesak continue to provide meaningful guidance for communities seeking to foster understanding and peaceful coexistence in an increasingly diverse and complex world.

“Wesak Day invites us to reflect upon the noble values that form the foundation of communal life, particularly wisdom, moderation, compassion and love for one another.

“These values are not only celebrated within religious traditions but remain relevant in building a society that understands and respects one another,” he said.

Anwar noted that Malaysia’s multicultural character makes such values especially important at a time when attempts are being made by certain quarters to create divisions along racial and religious lines.

He stressed that the principles of love, compassion and empathy highlighted during Wesak celebrations carry profound significance in countering prejudice, intolerance and hostility.

“In a country rich in cultures, religions and diverse backgrounds, the values of love, compassion and kindness that are celebrated during Wesak carry profound meaning at a time when certain groups seek to ignite hostility between races and religions.

“I believe that the spread of love and compassion will overcome the incitement of hatred, dispel prejudice and strengthen mutual respect and understanding, which form the foundation of national harmony and unity,” he said in a Facebook post.

The Prime Minister further expressed hope that this year’s Wesak celebrations would bring peace, wellbeing and happiness to the Buddhist community while reinforcing the humanitarian values shared by all Malaysians regardless of faith or background.

“May this year’s Wesak Day celebration bring peace, wellbeing and happiness to Buddhists, and continue to strengthen the humanitarian values that unite us as a civilised and dignified nation,” he said.

Anwar’s message comes as Wesak is being observed across Malaysia through prayers, charitable activities, meditation programmes and religious processions, reflecting the festival’s central themes of compassion, wisdom, generosity and spiritual renewal.

His remarks also reinforce the broader national emphasis on fostering interfaith understanding and social cohesion, with Wesak serving as a reminder that shared human values remain among the strongest pillars of Malaysia’s unity and stability. - May 31, 2026
