The government is prepared to place Malaysian students affected by the West Asia crisis in local institutions if needed, ensuring their studies are not disrupted.
JASIN: The Ministry of Higher Education is ready to place Malaysian students stranded or affected by the West Asia crisis into local higher education institutions. Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir stated this is a preparedness measure to guarantee studies are not disrupted.
This includes students who have recently received offers to study in the affected countries. Should the situation require it, space will be provided for them to continue their studies locally in accordance with their results and educational background.
Zambry explained that universities understand the situation and will discuss credit transfers based on Malaysian Qualifications Agency guidelines. This process aims to allow students to continue without repeating their entire course of study.
He noted that repatriating and placing students in local universities is not a new initiative. Similar steps were taken during past conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq war and involving students in Kuwait.
Official figures on affected students are not yet available, as universities in the crisis region are still operating normally. The number of students outside Jordan and Egypt is also relatively small.
The ministry will remain prepared and await feedback from students and institutions before taking further action. Zambry made these remarks after attending a townhall programme at UiTM’s Jasin campus.
