West coast of north Sumatra shaken by 6.5-magnitude earthquake, felt across Peninsular Malaysia

A STRONG earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck off the western coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, at 12:56 pm today, causing tremors to be felt across several states in Peninsular Malaysia, though authorities confirm there is no tsunami threat.

A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, at 12:56 pm today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The earthquake’s epicentre was recorded at 2.7 degrees north latitude and 95.9 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 57 kilometres.

MetMalaysia reported that the tremors were felt across several states on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

“Shaking was felt in areas along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia,” the department said in a Facebook post.

Authorities have confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the quake. - November 27, 2025
