The government is finalising a nationwide work-from-home policy for civil servants, with comprehensive guidelines to be announced imminently.
PETALING JAYA: The government is finalising details on the implementation of a work-from-home (WFH) policy for the public sector, with an announcement expected soon.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the matter is currently being reviewed by the Chief Secretary to the Government, with several final aspects being refined before it is rolled out.
He said the first phase of implementation will not be limited to Putrajaya, but will involve selected areas nationwide.
“Further details, including comprehensive guidelines for the public service, will be announced by the Chief Secretary,” he said during the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday.
Fahmi added that while the policy is being developed for the public sector, private companies are encouraged to adopt flexible arrangements where suitable.
He highlighted that many organisations have already implemented WFH practices since the Covid-19 pandemic, with some continuing such arrangements to date.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the private sector to adopt more flexible working arrangements, including WFH, following the civil service’s move to implement similar measures amid the global energy crisis.
In a special address last week, he said the WFH policy for civil servants would be implemented in stages and selectively to help manage economic pressures arising from rising global oil prices.
Anwar also encouraged private companies to consider similar arrangements, saying that some have already adopted flexible working practices.
