Everyone, regardless of age, colour or creed wants to be happy. But what do you think makes you happy? Money? Food? Promotion? Relationship? Family? Games? Shopping? This is something that we need to consider because we have only one finite resource here on earth - time. As long as man still has breath, he has the resource of time to do the things he needs or wants to.
We know that money is needed in life for each of us to function. Thus, we labour hard to earn a decent living. We work hard to further build our careers and achieve our dreams. Some get into relationships, get married and build their own families. Indeed, there is time and a season for everything in life. However, we need to take regular pauses to check on where we are heading. At the end of the day, after much hard work, we need to ask, “Am I really happy?”
Many of us are familiar with the phrase, “Sorry, I’m busy”. Busy…busy…busy…but what are we really busy with? Are we busy with things that will last? We can gain some wisdom from some who are on their dying beds contemplating mortality. It was found that nobody on their deathbed has ever said, “I wish I had spent more time at the office or at work.” Instead, many wished that they had spent more time with their children or loved ones and appreciating them.
The Covid pandemic has radically disrupted many of our normal rhythms and routines. Many have experienced the untimely passing on of relatives and friends. Maybe it is time for each of us in our different walks in life to pause and ask ourselves, “What makes me really happy?” Would we choose things over strong relationships? Would we choose self over others? Then we can reevaluate and recalibrate the way we spend our time.
