Earlier, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) against a man who posted a video mocking Islam.
JAKIM’s Director-General, Datuk Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee, said in a statement that they’ve also filed a police report to make sure action is taken under the law.
“What I did and said was completely wrong”
After staying silent, Vijayan Savarinathan finally spoke up and addressed the issue by posting an apology video, admitting he was in the wrong.
He said his actions were fueled by anger over a viral video involving a radio host who was previously accused of insulting Hinduism.
“I’m really sorry from the bottom of my heart. What I did and said was completely wrong. I was angry and couldn’t hold back because we were being insulted, but that’s not an excuse for me to make that video,” he said.
He might have been staying overseas
Sinar Harian reported that on March 6, the police were looking for the owner of the ‘Vijayan Savarinathan’ Facebook account after he posted a three-minute video insulting Islam.
At the time, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said Bukit Aman’s Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (USJT) had launched an investigation after receiving a police report. They were also trying to track him down, as he might be overseas.
The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code for actions that could stir racial and religious tensions, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network services.
