Recent announcements by WHO, state that a new variant is in the air, and this year alone, has reached 13 countries.

Mpox outbreaks in Congo and other parts of Africa has been noted a global emergency because of a new strain of the virus spreading.

Cases have risen among children and adults in over a dozen countries, and there aren’t enough vaccines available in Africa.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than 500 deaths and requested international help to control the virus.

So far, mpox has been found in 13 countries this year, with Congo seeing the vast majority of cases and deaths (14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported).

An infectious disease expert also said the new version of the virus from Congo has a high death rate and could pose a risk to nearby regions.

What is MPox?

Mpox, is formerly known as monkeypox. It is a viral disease caused by the mpox virus, which is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox.

What is its symptoms?

It begins with flu-like symptoms, like a fever, a headache, and muscle aches, followed by a distinctive rash that progresses to pustules.

How can it spread?

Mpox can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals, humans, or contaminated materials. While it is usually mild, it can be severe in those with weakened immune systems.
