Jose Mourinho did not stay neutral when the growing dispute between Kylian Mbappe and Alvaro Arbeloa became public.
Mbappe recently claimed he had been told he was Real Madrid’s “fourth-choice striker”, with Arbeloa later denying he ever made that remark.
The situation quickly became one of the biggest stories surrounding Real Madrid, and Mourinho’s response was revealing. Rather than avoid the issue, the former Madrid manager publicly backed Arbeloa.
That matters because this is no longer just about one selection decision. It is becoming a question of authority inside one of football’s biggest dressing rooms.

Arbeloa responded quickly and denied the claim, insisting he had never told Mbappe he was the club’s fourth-choice striker.
The issue then became less about tactics and more about credibility. Either Mbappe misunderstood the message, or Arbeloa felt forced into public damage limitation.
Jose Mourinho’s defence of Arbeloa was significant
Mourinho knows Arbeloa better than most people in football after managing him during his time at Real Madrid.
That is why his public backing carried weight.
Mourinho openly praised Arbeloa and defended his work amid the fallout with Mbappe rather than distancing himself from the controversy.
It would have been easy for Mourinho to avoid taking a position, particularly given his own links with Real Madrid continue to generate speculation.
Instead, he sided with the manager.
That feels significant because Mourinho has always prioritised dressing-room hierarchy and authority. Publicly challenging a manager has never been something he has viewed positively.
The Real Madrid issue is now bigger than one selection dispute
Real Madrid can deal with selection disagreements. What becomes dangerous is when those disagreements turn into public disputes involving star players.
Mbappe is already under huge scrutiny because of expectations around him, and the reaction from sections of the fanbase has shown how quickly pressure can build at Madrid.
Mourinho’s intervention highlighted something important. From his perspective, the bigger issue appears to be maintaining authority rather than debating whether Mbappe should start matches.
That is why his comments stood out.
