- The rare red weather warning for extreme heat has been extended by the Met Office until 9pm tomorrow for parts of London, the east and the south east of England.
- It comes after a provisional temperature of 36.1C recorded in Gosport, Hampshire, broke the record for the UK’s hottest June day on Wednesday.
- Lauren Bennett from the RSPCA told BBC Breakfast that dogs should only be taken out briefly for toilet breaks in shaded areas.
- She said: "With this red weather warning, actually we would advise probably not to walk your dogs at all because there isn't actually a cooler time of day."
- The RSPCA spokesperson added: "Just like people, it can be fatal, which is why we tell people to change their behaviour because our pets are completely under our control so the responsibility is on us."
