In recent months, Malaysia has seen a worrying surge in public shootings. From the fatal shooting at a restaurant in Brickfields, believed to be tied with another case in Cheras linking to secret societies, to another deadly incident outside a motorcycle shop in Klang. The growing frequency and boldness of these acts have rattled public confidence.

These cases shooting cases have been going on for sometime. In February, a man with nine prior convictions opened fire at Setia City Mall. In April 2024, a shooting occurred inside KLIA’s arrival hall, injuring a bodyguard. These events are pushing Malaysians to confront a difficult truth whether our sense of public safety is no longer guaranteed.

What’s even more alarming is the resurfacing of secret societies and gang-related violence. These groups, long considered a shadow of the past, are once again asserting dominance and are coming out in broad daylight, often using illegal firearms from unknown suppliers or smuggled in, we don't know.

The issue runs deeper than crime. It points to cracks in our social fabric. Growing fear among citizens, and communities feeling unprotected suggest a need to reform both policing and preventive strategies. Innocent lives are at stake at this point. Families and even the community would fear to have dinner at restaurants or to go shopping at malls.

Malaysia’s firearm laws are strict, but enforcement gaps and border weaknesses have allowed weapons to circulate among criminal networks. Public spaces like malls, cafés, and even airports now feel less secure.

To move forward, Malaysia must invest in intelligence-led policing, tighten cross-border gun control, and support rehabilitation efforts for at-risk youth. More importantly, we must rebuild community trust and a shared responsibility for safety.

This isn’t just about crime control. It’s about reclaiming the peace and confidence that once defined everyday Malaysian life.
