An Ella Enchanted series is in the works at Disney+, and Anne Hathaway is all set to return. However, this time around, she will be donning the producer’s hat.
When Ella Enchanted first hit theatres in 2004, it wasn’t a box-office hit. Even the critical response was fixed, with a 51% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, over the years, the goofy fairy-tale comedy built a devoted fanbase thanks to its potpourri of romance, giant snakes, a banger soundtrack (featuring appearances by Kelly Clarkson and Jesse McCartney) and a wonderfully chaotic performance from Anne Hathaway as Ella — a girl cursed to obey every command she’s given. The film, loosely based on Gail Carson Levine’s 1997 novel, also starred Hugh Dancy, Minnie Driver, Cary Elwes and Vivica A. Fox.
Now, more than two decades later, Ella is making a comeback.
What we know about the Ella Enchanted TV series currently in the works
Disney+ is officially developing a brand-new Ella Enchanted series — with Hathaway serving as an executive producer. However, there is no confirmation (so far) that she will appear onscreen.
The project is still in early development, so details are limited, but a few important things are already known. The series is reportedly being written by Ilana Wolpert, who previously wrote The Idea of You starring Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine. Meanwhile, Beth Schwartz will serve as the showrunner.
What will be the plot of the Disney+ Ella Enchanted TV series?
The story will reportedly follow 16-year-old Ella after she’s sent to boarding school following her mother’s death, where she starts uncovering secrets about her obedience curse while navigating friendships, bullying and a complicated crush on a prince.
Fans online are already debating whether the series will finally become a more faithful adaptation of the original book. Only time will tell if that will indeed be the case.
Do we know the release date?
So far, there’s no release date or casting announcements for the Disney+ series. But for fans who grew up shouting “Somebody to Love” at their TV screens, the return to Ella’s world already feels a little magical.
