‘WhatsApp chats, voice notes extracted’

Kota Kinabalu: A police officer revealed on Friday that WhatsApp chats and voice notes were successfully extracted from a mobile phone tagged WF11, which was among 15 mobile phones analysed by the Computer Crimes Investigation Unit.

Computer Crimes Investigation Unit analyst ASP Mohd Zaidi Abu Hassan told the coroner that WF11 was an exhibit consisting of a mobile phone and a SIM card.

When referred to several printed documents by Deputy Public Prosecutor Sofia S. Sawayan, Mohd Zaidi said the printed sheets were from his analysis report of the mobile phone tagged WF11.

The 70th deponent who testified before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan said that pages 77, 79, 122, 124–125, 164 and 308 referred to WhatsApp chats and two voice notes involving two teachers.

He further told the court that page 123 contained a chat description, while pages 165 and 942 were text messages sent by the owner of WF11.

Mohd Zaidi also identified all the mobile phones, including their SIM cards, for the purpose of marking them as court exhibits.

During the proceedings, the coroner stood down the hearing for a few minutes as Mohd Zaidi took some time to open documents stored in pen drives.

In response to a question, Mohd Zaidi testified that the mobile phones were returned to the investigating officer (IO) in the same condition as when they were received, adding that the items were returned by his personnel to the said IO.

He further told the court that he maintained a documented record of every movement of the exhibits, but the documentation was kept in his analysis file.

“For the process of returning the exhibits, no separate documentation was prepared apart from the MF03 form,” said Zaidi.

As for the WhatsApp audio extracted from WF11, the recording could not be played during the proceedings.

Mohd Zaidi is scheduled to continue his testimony on May 18, with the inquest set to proceed until May 22 this year.
