The Independent’s Chief International Correspondent Bel Trew has taken a closer look at the tit for tat strikes between Israel and Iran - and Donald Trump’s efforts to stop them

Israel launched airstrikes on central and western Iran in the early hours of Monday, with explosions reported in several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and Karaj.

The Israeli attacks came after a plea from Trump not to respond to Iranian missile attacks, which came in response to an Israeli attack on Beirut.
