It was a night of revelations. The most shocking reveal must be the claim by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council member Datuk Seri Azmin Ali that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad forgot why he resigned as prime minister in 2020.
A MalaysiaGazette TV videoclip (October 2, 2022) shows an animated Azmin rousing the crowd gathered at the Bersatu Selangor election event in Shah Alam as he told about when he recently met with Tun Mahathir who asked him to explain about the Sheraton Move which led to the formation of Perikatan Nasional. Azmin said there was no Sheraton Move.
Azmin got the crowd laughing when he told of asking Tun Mahathir why he resigned as PM, and got the response, “Tulah, saya lupa!” (That's it, I forgot).
At the time, Azmin said he was in his “jahiliyah” (ignorant) days Azmin was the vice president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). He said he was not a party hopper but was expelled from PKR.
Azmin elaborated further about him advising the PH presidential council about not forcing Tun M to handover premiership as there was no promise to make way for “seseorang yang saya malas nak sebut nama dia” (someone whom I won’t even bother to name). It is assumed he is alluding to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The revelation that Tun Mahathir forgot why he resigned as PM is naturally worrying. It makes me wonder what else did the PM forget while was in office. How much was he aware of what he said and did as PM?
There was an immediate response from Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who is also Tun Mahathir’s son, who accused Azmin of lying about the meeting with Tun Mahathir even taking place.
MalaysiaGazette reported that Mukhriz posted on his Instagram, “Azmin Ali jangan kurang ajar! Bila masa @chedetofficial duduk sembang dua jam dengan awak? Azmin memang penipu besar! Dengan pemimpin penipu macam ni, rakyat wajib tolak.”
Loosely translated: “Azmin Ali don’t be rude! When did you meet with Tun Mahathir to chat for two hours? Azmin is a big liar! With lying leaders like this, the rakyat must reject.”
That, I think, has to be the surprise revelation, that Mukhriz accused Azmin of lying. Didn't they use to be in the same political party, Bersatu? Tun Mahathir's resignation and Bersatu's departure from the PH coalition along with several PKR members led to the collapse of the government.
It’s a most unnerving feeling watching this drama unfold. Who is telling the truth and who is lying? Does Tun Mahathir know what he did or was he forgetful? When former compatriots like Azmin, Anwar, and Mukhriz are now political rivals, will the truth finally be told?
