An anonymous man recently shared his frustrating experience with a local influencer. It's a story that’s now sparking conversations about how some social media personalities treat their followers and the anonymous man which is the victim shared it through Facebook. According to his Facebook post, it all started when he replied to one of the influencer’s Instagram stories. She had posted a poll asking her followers which “route” she should take next in her career. Harmless enough,, so he clicked and thought nothing of it.
To his surprise, the next day, the influencer suddenly private messaged him. At first, he was shocked because it’s very rare that someone with over ten thousand followers starts a conversation with an anonymous person right? Will you? When he asked if it was a mass message, she replied, “Influencers can talk to people too.”
Being polite, he continued chatting. Things seemed normal until she mentioned she was tired of her nightlife job probably singing at the bar and wanted to focus on becoming a full-time live streamer. She said the platform she worked with offered rewards and even chances to perform in Taiwan if she met certain goals.
Wanting to be supportive, he agreed to “drop by” her live stream and send a small virtual gift. However, what happened next caught him completely off guard.
She asked him to send her a virtual gift worth up to RM3,950 which is roughly RM230 in real money. He was stunned. He didn’t want to spend that much but still decided to show some support by sending two smaller gifts worth around RM90 in total.
Instead of being thankful, the influencer lashed out. She called him “brainless,” told him to “go see a doctor,” and accused him of being too sensitive when he tried to explain himself.
“I just wanted to support her,” he said. “I didn’t expect to be insulted just because I couldn’t afford to spend more.”
He’s now sharing his story to remind others, especially those who like to support online creators to be cautious. Not every influencer appreciates genuine support; some might just see followers as wallets.
His message to others is clear: “Be kind, but don’t let people take advantage of your kindness. Support should never come with insults.”
