LAHAD DATU: A recent study of the Taliwas River Conservation Area (TRCA), about 36km from town, showed that wildlife that used to live there have not returned in the numbers expected even though logging has not happened for more than 30 years.

Taliwas Camp – as referred to by the Forestry Department – is a unique lowland and ultramafic forest that covers 9,546 hectares about 45km from the eastern part of the Danum Valley Conservation Area.

Before the Yayasan Sabah Group took over management of TRCA in 1991, the Forestry Department treated some of its areas with agroforestry or silviculture techniques like girdling and enrichment planting in the 1970s and 1980s.
