- An amber “extreme heat” warning is currently in place across large parts of England, with temperatures expected to reach 35C in the South East and Midlands.
- Temperatures are forecast to drop to around 27C by the weekend, while the Met Office’s long range weather forecast predicts weather systems will move across the UK from the Atlantic from next week, bringing rain for some.
- Over 70 per cent of England is now in drought following a record dry July and an August that has so far seen just five per cent of expected rainfall.
- May and June’s record-breaking heatwaves are believed to have led to more than 2,800 excess deaths, while July’s heat has fuelled wildfires.
- High pressure is expected to return towards the end of the month, bringing dry conditions and warm temperatures.
