- The UK is experiencing an extreme heatwave, with records for the hottest June day broken three times this week.
- Temperatures reached 37.3C on Friday in Santon Downham, Suffolk, with highs of 40C forecast for parts of Norfolk, and a red Met Office weather alert in place until 9pm on Friday from London up to Oxford, and across towards Canterbury.
- Train passengers are advised to travel only if "absolutely necessary" on Friday due to the extreme heat, which is also causing hot and humid "tropical nights" with temperatures not dropping below 20C in urban areas.
- The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat health alerts, warning of risks to even healthy individuals.
- The Met Office forecasts that the blistering heat will begin to ease over the weekend, with cooler temperatures expected from Sunday, potentially dropping by 15C, and a “return to more average temperatures” next week.
