As MyAeroSatu Chairman, I read that AirAsia is navigating a severe liquidity challenge in 2026, driven by high pandemic-era debt, a second-quarter net loss of RM527 million, and surging costs. Current Liabilities stood at RM18.4 billion as of June, 2026. The cash reserves stood at RM954 million, paired with a negative operating cash flow of RM582 million for the first half of 2026. It posted a RM527 million net loss in the second quarter of 2026 due to foreign exchange losses & high fuel prices. As such, the group is attempting to raise up to US$1 billion from international debt markets alongside RM700 million in local credit facilities. AirAsia states that “The funds are meant to consolidate facilities, replace high-cost pandemic debt, and extend maturities, rather than cover daily operational gaps.” (https://www.thestar.com.my>airasia's-US1bil-fundraising-to-refinance-debt-strengthen-balance-sheet<)

Reports indicate Malaysia's Finance Ministry has appointed Alton Aviation Consultant as adviser to assess the airline's funding needs, with potentials state backing or guarantees tied to strict conditions like board representation, with the public interest and economic impact central to its deliberations.
I remember learning from IATA lectures by Dr. Rigas Doganis, an airline & airport consultant who is also Visiting Professor at the College of Aeronautics, Cranfield University that “To stabilize its financial position, airline is aggressively redirecting its route network away from low-margin, high-competition sectors toward highly profitable, capacity-constrained markets. This tactical shift is core component of its survival strategy to maximize cash generation per seat-kilometer. Core network redirection strategy eliminating underperforming hubs by cutting low-yield regional routes facing intense competition.”

I agree with Dr. Doganis in expanding high-yield medium-haul segments reducing freed capacity toward high-demand slots in China, India & North Asia. Maximizing slot utilization at primary hubs by protecting high-value, historic airport slots to preserve long-term asset value for its debt restructuring plan.
