best black sesame desserts hong kong

In a foodie city like Hong Kong, trends come and go quickly, and you’ll notice this while scrolling local foodie accounts or browsing bakeries around town. Whether it was the Dubai chocolate craze or the pistachio and mochi obsession, eateries have been fast to react. Now, the spotlight is on black sesame. Though black sesame is nothing new in Hong Kong, it has gained fresh attention among the younger generation. Gone are the days of enjoying it only as a traditional soup. Today, black sesame appears in exciting new forms; soft serves, mochis, custards, and more. This humble ingredient has found a second life in innovative desserts that blend nostalgia with modern flair. From creamy swirls of black sesame soft serves to chewy mochi filled with nutty paste, the trend is everywhere. Cafes and dessert shops are putting their own spin on the flavour, making it both Instagram-worthy and deeply satisfying. If you’re ready to jump on the bandwagon, here’s where to find the best black sesame desserts in Hong Kong.

So, why the growing hype around black sesame, both in Asia and the West? In 2026, it’s trending as a ‘superfood’ thanks to its nutrient-dense profile. Packed with iron, calcium, and phosphorus, it also contains powerful antioxidants called lignans which help fight oxidative stress and inflammation.

Deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), black sesame is also valued for boosting vitality. Its rise isn’t just about health, though. As a versatile, plant-based ingredient, it’s easy to incorporate into bakery items and desserts. It adds a subtle, aromatic, nutty flavour that elevates everything from breads to pastries. With wellness and taste going hand in hand, black sesame has found a sweet spot. So, head to the viral bakeries in Hong Kong to get your hands on some black sesame treats.

What to get: Salted Egg & Black Sesame Dango Toast (HKD 108)

Indeed, black sesame has taken surprising forms in Hong Kong lately. And in a bold and slightly daring fusion of flavours, Japanese-style cafe, EATO marries the decadence of a French Toast with Hong Kong-centric flavours. The thick toast is doused in homemade black sesame sauce and topped with bits of salted egg and black sesame crackers, and some dango for extra sweetness. We recommend sharing with another sweet tooth and also sampling EATO’s savoury toasts to mix things up.

Chau Kee

What to get: Black Sesame French Toast (HKD 40)

If you’re dining at this much-loved dim sum house, make sure you save some space for the Black Sesame French Toast for a sweet (but not too sweet) finish. The Hong Kong-style French Toast is crisp and golden on the outside, and as you cut through the middle, the rich, gooey black sesame lava oozes out. There’s no fancy presentation here, but that’s the charm of local cha chaan tengs. You might have to wait anywhere between 10 to 15 minutes for your French Toast but it’s well-worth the wait.

The Cakery

What to get: Black Sesame Mochi (HKD 88 for two), or the Black Sesame Lava Tart (HKD 34)

The Black Sesame Mochi is nutty and aromatic, with some crispy golden kataifi mixed in with the black sesame paste. Alternatively, or additionally, the vegan Black Sesame Lava Tart is also worth trying–with a crunchy top layer of caramelised sugar, and an inner core of rich black sesame paste. Just make sure you place your orders at least three days in advance, and you can opt for home delivery or pick up at one of The Cakery’s locations in Hong Kong.

What to get: Open Sesame (HKD 42 for single, and HKD 62 for double)

Foodie trend so good, even Shake Shack had to hop on it. The cheekily named Open Sesame is one of the American fast-food chain’s Concretes, an ultra-thick frozen custard dessert. Served in a cup, this black sesame dessert is about 60% black sesame paste and 40% vanilla custard, and for some added texture, it’s topped off with dark chocolate chunks and black sesame crumble. Even if you’re going for the single portion, it can be quite heavy for one person to finish.
