- Around 20 million households in council tax bands A to D are to receive £100 toward energy bills as part of the chancellor's effort to address the cost of living crisis.
- Costing £2.6billion, the direct Household Energy Payment will go into bank accounts to combat rising costs and "take the pressure off in the coldest months and see people through to the Spring."
- Additionally, the Chancellor John Healey announced an extension on a VAT reduction on electricity until next summer, after prime minister Andy Burnham introduced the measure earlier this year.
- He said: "In the first week of this new government, we took VAT off electricity for 29 million households. Today I’m extending that VAT cut through the winter and spring to July, taking £50 off the annual price cap."
- Ahead of the Commons statement, Mr Healey announced standing charges on gas bills will be also scrapped from next year as part of his effort to ease the cost-of-living squeeze.
