Mahathir and Lim Kit Siang are like any other citizens these days, sitting at home shooting the breeze. Although Lim may still be an advisor to DAP, Mahathir has resigned from being Chairman of Pejuang.
Mahathir keeps talking about the old days when Anwar was his deputy. In an interview, Mahathir expressed his concern on Anwar’s ability to develop sound strategies to lead the country out of current economic crisis, adding that Anwar appears preoccupied with maintaining his support in the Dewan Rakyat.
He claimed that Anwar, who was his deputy PM from 1993 to 1998, failed to solve the country’s economic problems after becoming acting PM for a few months in the late 1990s.
Well not many people can solve the economics crisis overnight. Mahathir himself took more time to solve the same problem when he returned.
So, it matters not whether Mahathir is confident about who can or cannot do a job given to them, or whether anyone is able or not able to run a country as efficiently as expected. It's just an old timer's point of view.
On the other hand LKS is more pragmatic, asking Anwar to ignore Mahathir and "carry out as many of the “Reformasi” institutional reforms in the early months of the new government" because he may not have five years to do so.
We are more inclined to go along with LKS rather than subscribe to Mahathir reminiscences of things that happened 30 years ago.
Anwar ought to heed LKS warnings and implement changes for the sake of his and PH's credibility to deliver the promises made. Ignore the nay sayers and let bygone be bygone. Take the bull by the horns. Seize the day, for you are the man who can bring back the glory days for this country.
But time is not on your side as LKS said. Forces are already afoot to shorten your days in office as PM10 because there are others in the Opposition that would be pleased to see you out of office before the end of your term.
