The White House has tried to take credit for Wendy’s switching back to a classic look, but social media users aren’t buying it.
Wendy’s announced this week that it was kicking it old school with its iconic yellow packaging, tapping into a wave of 90s nostalgia as millennials and Gen Z seek childhood comforts.
When the fast-food joint first opened in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969, it used yellow cups and boxes to serve nuggets, fries and its signature Frostys. Over time, Wendy’s got rid of the yellow packaging for its now-familiar red and white boxes and cups.
Now, the yellow packaging is back at Wendy’s for a limited time, and if you ask the White House, it’s all thanks to President Donald Trump, a known lover of rival fast-food joint McDonald's.
In response to an X post about Wendy’s yellow packaging comeback, the White House account wrote on Thursday, “Thank you, President Trump!!!!!”
But people in the comment section either couldn’t see how Trump could have a hand in the decision or mocked him for claiming a fast-food refresh as one of his accomplishments.
“Trump has nothing to do with that. What are you smoking? You should say ‘Thank you, [Wendy’s founder] Dave [Thomas]’ and thank the customers who demanded it back,” one X user said.
Another wrote: “The level of delusion actually scares me.”
“Imagine having so few actual wins that you have to fabricate fake ones about fast food,” a third posted.
Wendy’s, meanwhile, said the reason for the switch-up was that its customers have been begging for it.
“Fans have been asking for its return for years, making it one of the most requested comebacks in Wendy’s history,” a company spokesperson told TODAY.com. “Yellow has been part of Wendy’s since the very beginning and is something many fans instantly recognize.”
The yellow packaging will return on September 28 and continue into 2027, Wendy’s told USA TODAY.
When asked by The Independent to clarify what it meant by its comment thanking Trump for the yellow packaging revival, the White House just said: “America is back!”
People on X also took issue with White House’s post, given that Americans are struggling to afford basic necessities, with even something once considered cheap, like fast food, hitting their wallets hard.
The cost of food was up 2.7 percent in August from the year before, according to the federal government’s Consumer Price Index. The cost of energy has skyrocketed during Trump’s Iran war, rising 16.3 percent in August from the previous year.
“Nobody can afford it, but thank you President Trump!” one person wrote.
Another said: “Anything on gas, grocery, rent or electricity prices there President Trump?”
“Hey we want affordable gas and groceries, not iconic fast food,” one person wrote.
Wendy’s move to bring back its nostalgic yellow packaging came after one of its largest franchise operators filed for bankruptcy.
Meritage Hospitality Group Inc., a major restaurant operator based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that runs more than 300 Wendy’s restaurants, announced the decision Thursday.
“The filing follows a candid assessment of the financial pressures facing the Company, including the sustained system-wide headwinds affecting the broader Wendy’s brand over the past few years,” the company wrote in a news release. “The Company has a high level of confidence in the opportunity for a brand turnaround.”
