White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney signals the election of the 267th Pope.
The new pontiff, chosen by 133 cardinals, becomes the spiritual leader of Catholics worldwide.
The election took approximately 24 hours following a conclave held in secrecy.
Three UK cardinals and one Irish-born American cardinal participated in the voting process.
The new Pope's identity will be revealed shortly after his acceptance, accompanied by the traditional "Habemus Papam" announcement.
