Who is calling for a cap on political donations – and what would it mean?

  • Labour peer Lord David Blunkett has called for a cap on all domestic political donations, including trade union funding, following a controversial £72 million donation to Reform UK from two crypto-billionaires.
  • The UK government has pledged to seriously address limits on political donations after the unprecedented sum, which amounts to three-quarters of all party spending at the last general election, was disclosed.
  • Trade union leaders have strongly opposed including union funds in any potential cap, arguing that union contributions are transparent and should be exempt.

  • Proposals to limit political donations are set to be debated in the House of Lords during discussions on the Representation of the People Bill.
