- Lucy Powell, Labour’s deputy leader, has been named as Education Secretary in Andy Burnham’s cabinet reshuffle.
- The MP for Central Manchester replaces Bridget Phillipson in the role, who is now the Women and Equalities minister.
- Ms Powell was among the Labour MPs who were early to help Mr Burnham’s campaign to return to Westminster in the Makerfield by-election.
- She previously served as the Leader of the House of Commons before being dismissed from the role during a cabinet reshuffle by former Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer in September 2025 following Angela Rayner’s resignation.
- The following month, she replaced Ms Rayner as Labour’s deputy leader, beating Ms Phillipson to the role.
