WHO chief Tedros warns of three attacks on health centres in Sudan’s South Kordofan, killing over 30 as conflict devastates the region’s health system.

GENEVA: The World Health Organization has reported three deadly attacks on health centres in Sudan’s South Kordofan region within a single week.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (pic) stated the assaults killed more than 30 people, further crippling a health system already overwhelmed by conflict.

“Sudan’s health system is under attack again,” Tedros warned in a post on social media platform X.

He detailed that an attack on a primary health centre on February 3 killed eight people, including five children and three women, while injuring 11 others.

A hospital was attacked the following day, resulting in one death.

Another hospital assault on February 5 killed 22 people, including four health workers, and injured eight.

Tedros emphasised that the region is already suffering from acute malnutrition.

The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been at war since April 2023.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Fighting is now concentrated in the central region of Kordofan.

“The whole world should get behind Sudan’s peace initiative to end violence, protect the people and rebuild the health system,” Tedros insisted.

He concluded that “the best medicine is peace.”
