- Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic, known as the Butcher of Bosnia, has died aged 84 in a UN prison hospital in The Hague.
- Mladic was convicted of genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in 2017 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
- He was held responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered.
- His forces were also responsible for the 43-month siege of Sarajevo, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.
- His death was confirmed by a family member after his defence team had previously requested his release on humanitarian grounds due to declining health.
