In a recent Facebook post, UMNO Youth head Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh criticized parents of 11 Chinese-medium secondary schools in Penang for their opposition to implementing at least one class taught in Bahasa Melayu. Despite the controversy, the Penang state government pledged to collaborate with the Education Ministry to resolve the issue.

The dispute arose from a ruling mandating one science and mathematics class to be taught in Bahasa Melayu, sparking dissent among school boards and parent-teacher associations (PTAs). They assert that the majority of parents prefer English instruction, as per the original intention of the dual language programme (DLP) in science and maths.

A letter from the state Education Department dated April 15 outlined the Education Ministry’s directive for at least one Bahasa Melayu class in all vernacular schools, each with a minimum of 20 students. However, the Penang Chinese-medium secondary schools strongly oppose this, citing parental resistance and administrative challenges.

Representing these schools, Datuk Seri Koay Hean Eng emphasized the policy's contradiction with parental wishes and its disruption to school administration. He highlighted the intended purpose of the DLP to enhance students' proficiency in STEM subjects and technical education, aligning with the goals of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.

The debate underscores the importance of language in education and its implications for students' future prospects. While Bahasa Melayu holds national significance, parents advocate for continued English instruction in science and maths to better prepare their children for technological and industrial advancements.

Malaysia being a multi racial and dynamic country in the Southeast Asia, efforts to bridge this linguistic divide necessitate collaboration between stakeholders to find a balanced solution that respects both national language policies and parental preferences. As discussions continue, the focus remains on ensuring the best educational outcomes for students while fostering unity and understanding among diverse communities in Malaysia.
