Why am I here in Malaysia? I am sure many of us Malaysians have pondered over this question before. Many who have the resources have chosen to migrate to ‘greener pasture’ or better living conditions abroad, hence the great brain drain from Malaysia. Many too (with or without the necessary resources to migrate) have chosen to stay put in this country called our home despite the many flaws and weaknesses that we see in our system.
I recall a few politicians whom I have great admiration. I was a little girl when I first heard Mr. Lim Kit Siang campaigning in Malacca. He was standing on top of a lorry while many listeners were sitting on wooden benches, stools or just standing around. I really enjoyed listening to his speeches. Today, Mr. Lim who is already in his 80’s is still around, encouraging many in Malaysia. He has been through a lot in his political career but he has not given up yet. Though he has taken a backseat in active politics, he is still contributing to the rebuilding of Malaysia through his presence and encouragement or his regular writings, sharing his views. I believe his love for Malaysia and her people and his vision of a great Malaysia made him endure many things and stay on in Malaysia.
Then, I think of our present 10th Prime Minister, Mr. Anwar Ibrahim. He has gone through a lot in his political career. False accusations and imprisonment did not dim Mr. Anwar’s hope of reformation for Malaysia. More than two decades ago, he was the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) of Malaysia. Would he have imagined how long his journey from the position of DPM to Prime Minister would take? It was indeed a long journey. Though he could have chosen earlier in his life to leave Malaysia and live a comfortable life abroad, Mr. Anwar has chosen to stay despite various obstacles. I believe his patriotic instinct and his desire for reformasi (reformation) spurred him on when the going was tough. Through the years, I am sure Mr. Anwar has seen the plight of the rakyat. His vision of reformasi did not fade. It remains bright and I believe Mr. Anwar still wants to give his best to make Malaysia great again.
What about us, the rakyat? We may not be policy makers but we all have our different talents and abilities. We can contribute in various forms such as business, sports, science and technology, music and arts, so that our nation shines again. So, let us all unite and use all our talents to lift this nation to greater heights. Love for the nation. This answers the question: Why am I here in Malaysia.
