THE state authorities must give an explanation to the public on the Auditor-General’s latest report that at least RM 1.5 billion worth of rural water supply for Sarawak and Sabah had not been implemented by the Borneo states.
Senator Abun Sui Anyit, who is Sarawak Pakatan Harapan information chief, said the report stated that there were 36 water supply projects not carried out in Sarawak and Sabah since 2016 despite the RM1.5 billion approved federal allocations.
Sui, a lawyer from Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat, said the state governments in the two states must provide a good explanation to the public.
“The rakyat needs some good answers to this latest report as water supply is a daily need, not a luxury.
“If these projects had failed to take off, there must be certain quarters who were responsible for these failures,” he told reporters today.
The AG Report 2024 said the 36 projects had failed to meet its objectives of helping the rakyat as the state authorities had not ensured their proper implementation on the ground.
Sui today said the latest revelation from the AG Report confirms that many rural folks in Sarawak (and Sabah) are still deprived of treated water which is the most basic of daily necessities.
Sarawak has a population of about three million.
Out of this, about one million are rural folk living in about 6,000 settlements scattered throughout this vast state. – The Vibes, July 5, 2024.
