Why BBC crime thriller starring Sheridan Smith will not return for second series

• The BBC has confirmed that crime thriller series The Cage, starring Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha, will not return for a second series.
• Created by Tony Schumacher, the five-part drama aired in April and followed two casino workers embezzling profits from their employer.
• A BBC spokesperson thanked creator Tony Schumacher, production company Element Pictures, and the cast and crew for their work on the series.
• The decision to end the show is understood to be unrelated to the BBC's recent budget cuts and financial pressures.
• Following the cancellation, Sheridan Smith will next star in ITV's Two Birds, while Michael Socha will appear in Channel 4 drama Deadpoint.
