- Dozens of Nazi battleships from World War II are emerging from the Danube River due to record low water levels caused by drought and brutal heatwaves.
- The ships belonged to Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet and were deliberately scuttled in September 1944 near Prahovo, Serbia, as they came under Soviet fire.
- Some of these wrecks are still laden with weapons, and have posed a long-standing challenge for authorities, despite past efforts to remove them.
- Krsta Brandic, a Prahovo resident, said the low water levels have almost stopped ship traffic: “As you can see, the (big) ships can’t pass anymore."
- Meanwhile, Romania shut down both reactors at its Cernavoda nuclear power plant due to low water levels in the Danube River used to cool them.
