For residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur and surrounding communities, Bukit Kiara Federal Park is more than just green space – it is a sanctuary, a social hub, and a vital “green lung”.

Yet for 21 months, this national asset has remained closed, fenced off with little explanation.

While the National Landscape Department manages the site, those who use it have been left in the dark. It is time for accountability.

Before its closure in July 2024, the park was a vibrant space for recreation and community life.

Seniors have lost their morning Tai Chi sessions and social interaction. Children no longer have access to streams and fountains. Thousands of residents have been deprived of a key space for exercise and mental wellbeing, particularly on weekends.

This prolonged closure has taken a toll on the community’s quality of life.

The site’s notice board now carries the acronym “Dalam Tempoh L.A.D” (Liquidated Ascertained Damages), indicating the contractor has defaulted. A contractual dispute between a government agency and a contractor should not result in a prolonged closure affecting the public.

A notice board at Bukit Kiara shows that the LAD is in force.

Residents are no longer asking for patience. They are demanding transparency. The National Landscape Department must provide clear answers:

  • What is causing the 21-month delay?
  • What immediate steps are being taken to resolve the issue?
  • When will the park reopen?

The time for vague assurances has passed.

This park belongs to the people. After nearly two years of closure, residents deserve clarity, accountability, and action.

Is the department listening?
