- Rex Heuermann, a Long Island architect turned serial killer, is being sentenced Wednesday after admitting in court to murdering eight women.
- Heuermann, 62, pleaded guilty in April to charges related to the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla. He also admitted to killing an eighth woman, Karen Vergata.
- The sentencing in Riverhead, New York, is expected to result in a life prison sentence for Heuermann, capping an extensive decades-long investigation into one of New York's most perplexing cold cases. Family members of the victims are anticipated to address the court during the proceedings, while Heuermann's ex-wife and children have stated they will not attend out of respect for the victims' families.
- An attorney for Heuermann’s wife wrote in a statement, “Asa Ellerup will not be attending the sentencing of her former husband, Rex Heuermann. Ms. Ellerup believes this day should be centered on the victims, their families, and the profound impact these crimes have had on their lives.”
- He continued, “Out of respect for those who have endured unimaginable loss and suffering, she does not wish her presence to distract from the purpose of these proceedings. Her thoughts remain with the victims and their loved ones as they continue their pursuit of justice, healing, and closure. At this time, Ms. Ellerup will have no further comment and respectfully requests privacy.
