  • A new study published in Nature Medicine indicates that consuming processed meat and other foods significantly increases the risk of chronic conditions.
  • These conditions include type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and colorectal cancer, which contribute to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually.
  • Even small daily amounts, such as one hot dog, are linked to an 11 per cent increased risk of type 2 diabetes and a 7 per cent increased risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages are also associated with an 8 per cent rise in type 2 diabetes risk and a 2 per cent rise in ischemic heart disease risk.
  • Researchers suggest that nitrates, nitrites, and high sodium content in processed foods may be contributing factors to these adverse health outcomes.
