A vacation that was meant to offer breathtaking underwater views ended in heartbreak when a Chinese tourist lost his life while diving at Pulau Sipadan, Sabah. The 37-year-old man, who was part of a diving group along with his wife and six others from various countries, drowned after entering the water without the instructor's permission.

The incident unfolded late in the morning on May 19, when the victim reportedly entered the sea on his own, bypassing standard safety protocols. According to initial findings from local authorities, the man’s decision to dive without supervision quickly turned disastrous. A boat crew member observed the man struggling and appearing panicked in the water before he sank beneath the surface.

Efforts to rescue him were launched immediately. A fellow diver responded swiftly and located the unconscious man approximately 25 meters underwater. The diver managed to bring him back to the surface, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered. Brief signs of life followed—he gasped and vomited—but he soon slipped back into unconsciousness.

Despite all efforts, the man was later confirmed dead upon arrival at Tawau Hospital. He had first been taken to the hospital in Semporna for emergency care, but his condition had deteriorated beyond revival.

The case has since been classified as a sudden death report (SDR), and a post-mortem was scheduled for the following afternoon at Tawau Hospital to determine the exact cause of death.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks involved in diving activities, particularly when safety protocols are not followed. Unsupervised diving, even in popular and well-managed diving spots like Pulau Sipadan, can lead to fatal consequences, especially for those unfamiliar with underwater currents or lacking adequate training.

In light of such accidents, tourists and divers are urged to strictly adhere to all safety instructions and never enter the water without professional supervision. Diving instructors and resort operators also bear the responsibility to ensure that guests are clearly briefed on risks and safety measures before any activity begins.
