POLICE say long-standing family tensions are believed to be at the root of a 33-year-old man fatally slashing his wife to death and allegedly committing arson at his in-laws’ home in Bukit Gambir, Johor.
The man has been remanded for seven days as issued by Magistrate Lee Kim Kiat as investigations proceed under Section 320 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and Section 435 for mischief by fire.
According to Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib, chief of Tangkak district police, the suspect was initially detained for allegedly setting fire to a car and motorcycle at his mother-in-law’s residence in Durian Chondong, Muar.
“During questioning, the suspect appeared disoriented and claimed his wife was missing,” Roslan said. “Officers who visited his house discovered her body in the living room, partially covered with a blanket. A knife was found nearby.”
Police believe the killing, along with the arson attempt, stemmed from ongoing domestic issues. The suspect has a previous record related to criminal mischief.
The victim’s 63-year-old mother described her daughter, aged 34, as increasingly isolated since marrying the man three years ago.
“He hasn’t spoken to me for a long time and would not allow my daughter to see her family,” she said. “He always insisted we stay away.”
She recounted the night of the arson: “He came late at night and set our car and motorbike ablaze. If we’d woken even a minute later, my grandchildren and I might not be here today.”
Devastated by her daughter’s death, she added: “I always sensed something terrible would happen. Now, I only want justice to be served.”
The victim’s mother, Fatimah Seman has spoken of her heartbreak following the brutal killing of her daughter, Iecah Junus, 34, who was allegedly slashed to death by her husband in Bukit Gambir, Johor, last Monday.
Speaking to Sinar Harian, Fatimah said the man had long forbidden her daughter—affectionately known as ‘Ecah’—from visiting or contacting her family, reiterating, “He hadn’t allowed her to meet her parents or any relatives for quite some time,” said the mother of four.
Iecah, who worked as a factory clerk, had reportedly been living in isolation for years. Her mother’s fears were realised when the suspect was arrested after allegedly setting fire to vehicles at the family home, which led to the discovery of Iecah’s body at their residence in Taman Cahaya.
