Australia will hold its federal election on May 3, 2025, with voters set to choose between the Labor Party and the Liberal Party.
Peter Dutton, the Liberal Party’s candidate, has drawn comparisons to the U.S. President Donald Trump because of his policies and rhetoric. In response, Dutton has stated, 'I’m my own person,' to clarify that his views differ from Trump’s.
Trump’s time as president was seen by many as chaotic, marked by sudden policy changes, strong opinions, and constant controversy. His actions often caused division in the U.S. and made headlines around the world.
However, Dutton has the support of Gina Rinehart, Australia’s wealthiest person, who is openly supportive of Donald Trump. Rinehart is a strong backer of the Liberal Party, and in the 2023-2024 financial year, her company, Hancock Prospecting, donated A$500,000 to various divisions of the party.
In line with his political stance, Dutton has also stated that if he is elected, he plans to cut migration by 100,000 people each year to reduce pressure on housing and infrastructure.
This proposal raises concerns about the future of Australia’s diverse migrant population. As of 2024, around 31.5% of Australia’s total population was born overseas, underscoring the country's multicultural nature. Among them, Malaysians make up approximately 0.66%, representing a significant portion of Australia’s migrant community.
Dutton’s plan to cut migration could have far-reaching effects not only on new arrivals but also on the renewal of existing visas. The government’s approach to limiting immigration might lead to stricter visa policies or longer wait times for migrants seeking to extend their stay.
Adopting a stance similar to Donald Trump’s could trigger significant economic and social shifts in Australia, much like those seen in the U.S. under Trump’s leadership. Such changes would likely affect sectors of the economy that depend on migrant workers, potentially leading to job shortages and slower growth in industries like agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality.
As Australia heads toward the 2025 federal election, migrants may find themselves facing uncertainty about their future. Will they choose to leave Australia, or will they stay and endure whatever changes lie ahead?
