The ending of the K-drama saw Yeo Ri and Gang Cheol confront the Colossal Shadow (played by Seo Do-young), a vengeful fire spirit born from an ancient betrayal of the royal family.
When the spirit possessed King Yi Seong (played by Kim Ji-hoon) to kill the crown prince, Yeo Ri used her shamanic powers to summon the Fire Spirit Reaper. Though she was initially overpowered by the Colossal Shadow, Gang Cheol arrived just in time to defeat the spirit. However, he ended up losing his life in the process.
Moved by his sacrifice, the Jade Emperor granted Gang Cheol a choice — either ascend to heaven as the Dragon King or remain on earth as a human. Gang Cheol chose the latter. The show concluded with Gang Cheol and Yeo Ri raising their daughter and continuing their quiet life in service to the royal palace.
Could The Haunted Palace return for season 2?
As of now, there has been no official word from SBS regarding season 2 of The Haunted Palace.
However, the series wrapped up with a complete and emotionally satisfying finale, tying up all of its plotlines and fulfilling its character arcs. This makes the possibility of a second instalment highly unlikely.
