The government has responded to the suggestion that underage girls who engage in consensual sex (statutory rape) with men should also be subject to legal action, as voiced by Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stressed that the suggestion is the police chief’s personal opinion and does not represent the government’s stance or the official policy of his Ministry.

“That is his opinion; it remains his personal opinion. It is not yet time for me to comment on anything. He gave his opinion based on the figures that occurred in the state. That is his opinion,” he said.

Go through the proper process

Saifuddin stressed that the opinion did not reflect a national consensus and that the government will only make a decision after going through the appropriate legislative process.

“If a matter involves national policy, it must be tabled in Parliament, its governance must be made, and the relevant act amended first.”
