Wise’s latest update comes in the form of expanding its QR payment support to more than 50 destinations, which allows customers to use local payment networks through the Wise app instead of setting up separate local payment apps or relying on cash.

The service already supports DuitNow QR in Malaysia and now connects to payment schemes including PayNow in Singapore, QR Ph in the Philippines, Swiss QR-bill in Switzerland and Qvik in Hungary.

Wise has also partnered with Alipay+ to make QR payments easier across Asia. In mainland China, eligible Wise customers can scan and pay at millions of Alipay+ enabled merchants directly through the Wise app without needing a Chinese bank card, local mobile number or separate app setup.

Alipay+ coverage also extends to destinations including Hong Kong, South Korea, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Australia and New Zealand, alongside markets in Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.

To make things even more seamless, Wise is also introducing a customisable eSIM that lets travellers purchase mobile data through the same app.

Wise also provides in-app guidance to help travellers estimate their data requirements. If plans change, unused data purchased through eligible plans can be refunded.

Customisable eSIM plans are available to customers in Malaysia and several other markets, while standard regional plans cover more than 150 destinations.

The Wise Account also brings together other travel-related features, including pay-as-you-go airport lounge passes, a global ATM map for finding nearby cash points and tools for splitting multi-currency bills with friends and family.

With QR payments and mobile connectivity now sitting alongside these features, Wise is positioning its app as a broader travel companion rather than simply a way to move money across borders.
